As I have with all her other books, I highly recommend this one. It is written for younger readers who will absolutely love it. It has the perfect blend of excitement and Godly character lessons to help children learn as they read. Not only that, readers will learn about the historical setting and time period, making these books five star! Parents and teachers alike should give these books to their children to read. 
In Andi Lassoes Trouble, she learns more important lessons as she desires to enter a rodeo with her horse. The book is full of excitement from the first chapter when Andi finds out about an upcoming rodeo and wonders if she'll be allowed to enter!

Yet again, Susan K Marlow weaves character lessons into this exciting work of historical fiction to benefit young minds even more.

This is a darling book sure to please any woman or girl. I was an avid letter-writer when I was a girl and the sight of an envelope still thrills me. The addition of something to read within an envelope is even more wonderful. This little book captures all the delight of handwritten, personalized letters and pairs it with inspirational topics to boost the spirit. The illustrations are unique and charming. The words are generally witty and uplifting. However, I was disappointed by the lack of depth in this book. One cannot be truly encouraged with a mere phrase or mantra. I know many, many people won't agree with me but I think Bible verses are what was lacking in this book. Scripture really gives hope and joy and comfort and future. At the same time, don't get me wrong. I also appreciate a variety of inspirational quotes and witty sayings that aren't Scripture. I simply found these ''letters to lift your spirits'' lacking in depth and quality.

I do know that many women will find this a fun and thoughtful gift however, and be happy to receive it in a gift basket or any form of gift.

I have honestly looked forward to this new book from Susan Marlow the entire year! It is so delightful to look forward to an author's new works as they are published! I should have recorded a video of two of my friends' reactions when I showed them my copy of this new book. The excitement was enough to advertise how beloved these books are to us! During the same week, I also had sisters in my household begging to read my copy. We also had to have a pact not to tell eachother how the book ended for fear of spoiling the surprise for the other readers!

As I have said in my previous reviews of this author's books, she is an unusually excellent writer! The Andrea Carter series has the quality of the beloved Little House series. Mrs. Marlow is one of the best Christian authors I know of. To add more value to that statement, I have read and reviewed a variety of Christian historical fiction and novels for adults as well as children. I love Susan Marlow's style of writing and the thought she puts into each of her books. I am always interested through every chapter of every book she produces. Although I'm an adult I looked forward to the free time I would have on the weekends to read the next chapters of Courageous Love! In this final book in the series, Andrea Carter is the same girl we have watched grow up through the books. Of course, at age seventeen she is becoming a woman and must deal with different issues than the previous books. I will not give away any of the story but I loved, absolutely loved Andrea Carter grown-up! I am impressed by how the author was able to continue Andi Carter's adventurous and impulsive spirit while allowing her to becoming a lovely young woman. I didn't want this story to end. Needless to say, I am likewise saddened that this is the last book in the series! I definitely hope the author will continue to write such wonderful historical fiction!

I had previously read the author's book 10 Ultimate Truths Girls Should Know, so was excited about this new publication. In fact, I think this book is even better than the author's first. Incredibly relevant to today's culture, this book uses the world of social media and relationships as examples to explain important truths. I was especially touched by this book because I too went through all the insecurity and feeling of rejection described in the chapters. I am sure most girls do experience the pain of rejection and feeling worthless. This book is solid, deep and full of loving words which will help teenage girls. It will help them (or you) get through hard points in relationships with people, times of discouragement over how God created you, and confusion about God's truths. There are so many answers in this easy-to-read book and I highly recommend it! I will admit that it is best for pre-teen, teens and college-age girls. At 25 I found the examples directed towards a younger audience. But it was definitely a helpful read, nevertheless. It caused me to reflect on the hurts of my teenage years and wish I had dealt with them more victoriously.

As the title explains, this paperback book is meant to be a 90-day devotional. Of course I read it more quickly since I was reviewing it but I think it was very well planned and organized for daily reading. I loved how the book covered a variety of personality types- whether you (or your daughter) are more girly-girl, active/sportsy, or in between you will be able to relate to and learn from this book. 
I found the chapters full of wisdom and depth without being overwhelming or boring. I will point out that this book is directed towards Christian girls but of course will also be beneficial to girls who are not yet believers just as long as they understand that not all the wording or promises in the book are relevant to her.

It was with excitement that I welcomed the latest book from Susan K. Marlow in her popular Andrea Carter series! Although an adult, I find Susan's books quite interesting and -to my joy- wholesome. This combination is sadly lacking in current Christian fiction for any ages, so I highly recommend these books. Author Susan Marlow has developed the Andrea Carter series from the initial Circle C Beginnings books, to Circle C Adventures and now at Circle C Milestones. Any reader will find themselves interested in the family featured in these books, particularly horse-loving, spunky Andrea Carter! I personally love how each book, especially the latter few have dealt with key issues in growing up: forgiveness, pride, faith and more. In The Last Ride Andi (Andrea) is now a young lady of 16 and must learn to balance her childhood self with the woman she should be. She most importantly must learn to forgive, especially in a very difficult situation which you will only discover by reading this exciting book! 

An important note: although part of a series, this book would also be great on its own! The author writes so clearly that it doesn't take much effort to understand the setting and characters!

   This Bible from Zonderkidz is perfect for girls of various ages! I was absolutely delighted with it. From the sturdy hardcover binding to the feminine purple tone of the text inside to the wise notes from Nancy Rue interspersed throughout the Bible, this edition is a wonderful one for your daughter or granddaughter. (or niece or friend....) What I especially loved about this edition is that the Bible text is the tried-and-true New King James which is excellent for young minds as well as our adult brains. :) So often companies will water down the Bible, trying to make it more palatable or understandable to younger minds which are full of video games and abbreviations. However, what they really need is the traditional, inerrant word of God as close to the original Greek and Hebrew text as possible! And NKJV upholds that standard. The only unusual thing about this publication is, besides the tone of the text, is the introduction to each book of the Bible and the little notes here and there which are written with wisdom and care by Nancy Rue. This Bible would be the perfect gift for any young girl in your life!

   It was through book reviewing for Kregel publications that I first discovered author Susan Marlow. Ever since reading my first book of hers I have been pleased by her wholesome books, not to mention her above-the-average writing skill. To me, Susan has an honorable view of literary and holds to a standard which most authors (yes I am including Christian novelists) don't keep in mind at all anymore. The books I have thus read by Susan Marlow remind me of the historical fiction books I practically devoured as a child and teen! It is good to see new books coming out that I can feel right about giving to my younger siblings to read! 

   Heartbreak Trail is yet another book in the Andrea Carter series and it features a now growing up Andrea! At fifteen, the lively and tomboyish girl experiences many more adventures and learns from her own mistakes. Having just turned the age which made her close friend begin thinking of getting married and settling down, Andrea is determined to continue her adventurous ways and begs to be allowed to join her brothers and their workers on a special herding trip. While on the trip, Andrea stays true to her usual liveliness and outdoor skill but suddenly becomes attracted to a young hired worker. The reader can't help but wonder what will come of that! 

As always, the author of these books skillfully weaves an exciting tale while keeping good morals and a Christian foundation. 

Your children and teens are bound to love this book!

Although there are many wonderful books for children and young adults which are not particularly Christian (think Little House and such), it is always great to be able to provide books for your children which reinforce Biblical truths and grace. I have found that Susan's books stay true to the Christian faith without becoming fake or unrealistic.
Unusually for Christian works of fiction, her books are also quite exciting. These books make splendid read-aloud as well as personal reading books.

This is a book full of important, Biblically-sound truths for young girls. As we all know, the teenage years are difficult for girls as they struggle with graciously accepting all the physical and mental changes which occur at that important time. 
Too often, teenage girls fail this passage into womanhood, not physically but spiritually and mentally. They become broken, wasted creatures who are unable to embrace the futures God has in store for them. Because I was not-to-long-ago a teenager, I know every struggle a girl can face. And most of all, I know it is nigh impossible to convince a teenager that their present struggles will soon fade and seem trivial. I know. I remember the years in which I thought having clear skin was the key to happiness....only to realize when I reached that goal that the key to happiness is definitely something bigger. 
You had to be a teenage girl to understand.
Maybe you are one yourself. This book is for you. The author, Kari Kampakis has four daughters of her own and in this her first book, she gently and lovingly guides the teenage girl through ten ''ultimate truths'' that will change her world. No longer do you, the reader have to be subject to bullying, emotional roller coasters, selfishness, etc. Kari is clear and practical in the way she presents the facts and solutions in this 11-chapter book. 

Chapters include: 

• Kindness is more important than popularity.
• People peak at different times of life. Trust God's plan for you.
• Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Otherwise, you'll never stick to your guns.
• Today's choices set the stage for your reputation.
• You were born to fly.

A major thing I loved about this book is how adamantly opposed to premaritial sex this author is! She clearly stands against sexual impurity and mothers can be sure that their daughter will be encouraged and convicted through reading the author's thoughts on purity. 

Along that line, this book is definitely targeted towards public school attendees. There were some scenarios and ''quick quizzes'' (''what would you do....") which were extremely racy and outright public school. At least I hope stuff like that doesn't go on in Christian school! 

Some of my confusion stemmed from these scenarios and were answered by the realization that the author is Catholic. Although Catholic schools have high standards, the students come from a variety of families and one can not trust the faith of the children to be true or strong. The same with Christian schools, of course. Anywhere were children are together for hours on end can lead to sinful discussions and desires. 

Another portion of the book which disturbed me was the author's view of dating. She openly expresses the following: "The boys you date now won't be your spouse. They're meant to lead you to your spouse, just as you'll help lead them to theirs." This simply bothered me since I wouldn't want my daughter playing the dating game! The author also upholds the joys of young romance. Although she strongly stands for sexual purity, she isn't very strong on the emotional side. 
Nevertheless, I was impressed by her chapters about romance. In short, this book has much good as well as some less good portions. 
One of the less good facts about this book is that Kari put in her own opinion about when a girl should marry.  I thought this wasn't her place, since marriage is a good thing and such advice up to the mother to give. I quote: ''I started dating my husband when I was 23, which is relatively young. Within a month we knew we'd get married, but we waited 3 years because he lived in a different city and I loved my job. To this day, I take great pride in those 4 years I supported myself and earned career recognition. I 'm glad I was able to marry a man not by necessity--because I needed financial support---but by choice. ''
I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want my daughter thinking like that! 


Lastly, this book is written for the Christian teenager, thus limiting its audience. Throughout much of the book, Kari Kampakis assures the young girl reader that she is a daughter of the King, beloved, cherished...this certainly isn't detrimental to your unbelieving daughter if she knows she is not saved. But I don't want any young girls getting the wrong impression of their standing before Christ if they are not His. 
Thankfully, the author strongly explains that we need Christ as our all in all. 

I would not recommend this book for homeschoolers. I know the author didn't intend it for such, but since my audience may be homeschoolers, I just wanted to throw this in as a homeschool graduate. Although there is much in it that is Biblically-sound, many of the situations are foreign to those who are not in a public classroom environment. Nevertheless, college students may still benefit from this book. Girls, we all know teenage years aren't the only hard ones. I still struggle with many of the issues presented in this book. And although I am sad that I haven't overcome them, it's nothing to be surprised about. Women will always have similar struggles, even as they mature. Thus much of the content in this book is appropriate for all ages. It will be a blessing for a mother to read aloud to her daughter! Also, I can imagine girlfriends benefiting from reading it side by side.

Great book! The First Principle by Marissa Shrock

This book is a winner! It makes my top 10 of 2014, I think (having read it in December 2014)!

I casually started it one afternoon and could not put it down! I completed it the following morning (it was hard to stop reading it just to go to bed, but I mastered that difficult task)! This futuristic novel is absolutely amazing. The author is not only an excellent writer, but she has this stellar story line which I am just blown away by. 

As I finished this book I realized I was left with some questions; not too many as to be confused and dissatisfied, but rather enough that I really hope the author is planning a sequel! (please!!!) 

Without life, there can be no liberty or pursuit of happiness. In this futuristic novel, changes have occurred to North America which are -unfortunately- imaginable. The United States of America has become the United Regions of North America in which many of our worst dreams have come about. The government has more control than ever, including the power to decide who can have children and who can't. Population management includes the rule that underage pregnancies be terminated immediately. Birth control for girls under 18 is mandatory and since teenage sex hasn't diminished but rather increased by this futuristic year, abortions are constant. There is, however a remnant of people fighting against all this wrong. They are known as the Emancipation Warriors who are primarily Christians. Vivica Wilkins, the main character in this book has no idea what she will be getting into when she starts forming personal convictions against the Population Management law. Ironically, Vivica is the daughter of the governor of her territory and, as you can imagine, is in a far-from-ideal situation for expressing opinions opposing that of the government. 

I have no desire to give the storyline away, so all I will say is that things progress rapidly in this novel! Vivica finds herself swept into a world of danger. Should she rely on the Emancipation Warriors in her time of need? Should she trust a group of people she formerly thought of as rebellious? Should she stand up against her own mother? 

This book is a strong stand against the evils a government can inflict. Well-written and exciting, the reader will not be disappointed. I was brought to tears at some points by the all-too-realistic situations. Most of all, I was inspired and convicted. This is a powerful book with a strong message and I can't wait to read a sequel!

For conservative readers: This book may not be appropriate for younger readers. 

Teenage sex is a major, although discreet, topic in this book. 

There are some violent and graphic moments in this book which may be too much for younger readers. However, I think it is excellent for teenagers on up!

   Having younger sisters, I was looking forward to this book from Tyndale publishers! I read through the entire book quite quickly and was pleased at the absence of shallow content. Too often in books for young believers, Christian values and doctrines are so weak they hardly exist. This book has the perfect balance, I think. It presents important lessons and things for young girls to ponder, yet the page-long devotions will not go over their heads. I gave it to my 8-year old sister to read. It would be good for older girls as well, but some of the references are younger and best for...ages 7-10 I would say!
   Of course if your daughter (or younger sister!) isn't saved, be sure to carefully explain to her that although she is created in God's image, she is not His princess yet. Therefore, she shouldn't take for granted that every promise and assuring word is meant for her as an unredeemed little girl! Nevertheless, I would still recommend this book for all readers, no matter what their Spiritual state. This book could even be the means to draw your young reader to Christ!
Every chapter/devotion begins with a verse and the following text explains or draws from that Bible verse.
A very good book which would also be helpful in training little girls to continue doing daily devotions!

   I was interested in this book because I've been cooking and baking since I was a little girl and as for parties...my family has been doing those since before I was born! As of now, we still do eleven themed parties a year. Needless to say, we love coming up with ideas for decorating, foods to prepare, etc. etc. 

I was actually pleased with this book for girls. It was full of fun ideas for parties and get-togethers. There were examples as to decor, yet it wasn't overbearing, leaving the young hostess plenty of room for imagination! Menu ideas were given as well as actual recipes, found at the back of the book. These recipes are surprisingly real. I was expecting them to be full of store-bought mixes and such, but instead the authors wisely decided to create simple recipes the girls can make from scratch. Many of them could even be converted to ''healthy''! The parties in here are all fun and pretty. Very feminine. I can assure you your daughter, any young girl in your life, or even yourself will be delighted with the ideas presented here. The pictures are pleasant and bright. (and as an aside, the models have come a long way from models of 1990's craft books. ;) )

I appreciated all the ''hostess tips'' included in this paperback as well. After reading this book, your daughter will definitely know more about becoming a gracious hostess. There are tips for the reader as guest too. 

I recommend this book to every girl who loves (or wants to learn to love) giving parties or get-togethers!

Good book: Singled Out by Nikki Derouin

Singled Out: Finding Contentment When It's Just You and the Lord....by Nikki Derouin

   This new book is both encouraging and convicting.
As an unmarried woman with the desire of marriage, Nikki is not only qualified but gifted to share godly wisdom with the hundreds of single women of all ages who are looking for advice and purpose.
 As a single young woman, I was challenged by her loving encouragement and wise rebukes. Her hope for young ladies is that they think beyond the usual mindset that being single is some sort of curse. Although she doesn't commend singleness, she exhorts each of us to make sure we are attempting to fulfill God's will for our lives right now. There are many different seasons in our lives. We must not become drastic- assuming that marriage is never to be for us- or unrealistic- selfishly dreaming of the marriage we deem our right!

''Marriage is not a guarantee. A spouse in not included in the ''Christian Package''. But I'll tell you what is included...security in Christ.''

Nikki carefully covers every heart aspect you may have experienced: selfish dreams, godly dreams, the sure calling many of us feel for motherhood,  bitterness, struggles with trusting God with our future, etc.

  In my view, the most important quality of her book is the counsel to look past our personal dreams and selfish view of life and to really try to understand what we were created for. No matter whether we are married or unmarried, we are individuals in the sight of God and we are accountable to Him as such. Although marriage is a beautiful picture of Christ and the Church (and Nikki is careful to describe marriage as such), and although it definitely is better for two to work together for the Lord than one; there are many instances where it just isn't God's will for a person. And we shouldn't waste time complaining or feeling deprived because how to we know the length of each season in our lives? Let us come before God as individuals and strive to serve Him the best way we can NOW.
   As you have most probably noticed, I am having a hard time putting my thoughts into coherent words. But I assure you Nikki Derouin didn't have that problem in her new book. I encourage you to read it. You will be blessed.
