My review of the book Rising Above a Toxic Workplace by Gary Chapman, Paul E. White, Harold Myra

Rising Above a Toxic Workplace: Taking Care of Yourself in an Unhealthy EnvironmentRising Above a Toxic Workplace: Taking Care of Yourself in an Unhealthy Environment

Learn how to thrive in—or escape from—a toxic work environment.

Toxic organizations are rife with conflict, fear, and anger. The environment causes people to have physiological responses as if they’re in a fight-or-flight situation. Healthy people become ill. Colds, flu and stress-related illnesses such as heart attacks are more common. By contrast, in resonant organizations, people take fewer sick days and turnover is low. People smile, make jokes, talk openly and help one another." - Annie McKee (author, consultant)

Many employees experience the reality of bullying bosses, poisonous people, and soul-crushing cultures on a daily basis. Rising Above a Toxic Workplace tells authentic stories from today's workers who share how they cope, change, or quit. Candidly they open up about what they learned, what they wish they had done, and how to gain resilience.

Insightfully illustrating from these accounts, authors Gary Chapman, Paul White, and Harold Myra blend their combined experiences in ministry and business to deliver hope and practical guidance to those who find themselves in an unhealthy work environment.

Includes a Survival Guide and Toolkit full of strategies and realistic insights

Published 2016 by

Yet another publication of God's Holy Word! Again, Thomas Nelson creates a new study Bible to help you delve deeper into God's word. This version is the New Kings James version which is known for its accuracy and closeness to the original Greek and Hebrew texts. This study Bible is full of notes and different options for study schedules. You will find three different suggestions for studying the entire Bible: Book by Book, Verse by verse, or Topic by Topic.
Personally, I found the study plans in this Bible a little hard to understand and follow. But once carefully looked at they make more sense. Also, the study notes weren't as deep as they could be. Lastly, many of the Bibles published by Thomas Nelson are hardcover with a dustjacket and I find that the dustcover gets ruined pretty quickly if one reads ones Bible daily! Just a point I thought of.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

Studying the Bible does not have to be an intimidating or overwhelming experience. The study of God’s Word can be easy and rewarding if you break down the Bible into easy-to-understand segments. The NKJV Know The Word Study Bible offers three easy ways to begin studying Scripture and helps individuals transition from being a casual reader of the Bible to becoming a regular student of the Word. Whether you prefer to study the Bible book by book, verse by verse, or topic by topic, each starting point offers powerful insights that will help you develop a daily routine of Bible study. The Book by Book series of notes leads you through the main points of each book of the Bible. The Verse by Verse studies help you to dig deeper into God’s Word at a verse level. The Topic by Topic articles, which cover 21 key theological topics, give you a bird's-eye view of Scripture and guide you through the main themes that run throughout the Bible.

A review of the book Riley Unlikely by Riley Banks-Snyder

Riley Unlikely: How One Young Woman's Heart for Africa Is Changing the World

Riley Unlikely: How One Young Woman's Heart for Africa Is Changing the World

This is the autobiography of Riley Banks who at the young age of 14, founded a non-profit organization called Generation Next. Generation Next seeks to enrich the lives of young people in Kenya in the hopes that they will be better equipped for their futures. Riley was first gripped with the inspiration to travel to Kenya at age 13. When she saw the conditions over there she quickly was filled with ideas of ways to help the poor yet joyous people living there. Riley's world was changed and she did not hesitate to start doing things to help. This book was a wonderful read. It was easy to understand and interesting yet life-changing as Riley shares what she learned as she compared Kenyan poverty to American luxury. I recommend this book for a variety of readers of all ages!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

Riley Unlikely is the inspiring story of Riley Banks, who first traveled to Kenya at age 13, and has been back every year since bringing backpacks of school supplies and hygiene kits for young girls, developing relationships and friendships, and is currently, as a young millennial, raising money to build a complete learning complex in Kibwezi, Kenya for those who have nothing.

At age sixteen Riley learned that, because of a rare medical condition, she would never be able to have her own children. Devastating news to most young women, especially those who love children and have always dreamed of having their own family. But Riley’s response was: Kenya has given me a thousand children.

Riley’s stories of her trips to Kenya, her struggles to figure out how to best serve and care for these people she has fallen in love with, and her own unexpected health issues are funny, compelling and gripping. Readers will find that God writes surprising stories in the lives of those who follow Him. Hard to put down, Riley Unlikely will inspire you to pursue your dreams and make a difference in your own world—and around the world.

The NKJV Study Bible, Second Edition review

The NKJV, Study Bible
The NKJV Study Bible, Second Edition
This is a beautiful publishing of the New Kings James version of the Holy Bible. From an aesthetic view, the binding is very pleasing with its cheerful blue tone and its imitation leather covers. The interior, apart from being the Holy Scriptures is wonderful because it is a red-letter edition and it has hundreds of study notes. This is a perfect gift for anyone.
I received a copy of this Bible from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

A Martyr's Grace: 21 Moody Bible Institute Alumni Who Gave Their Lives for Christ by Marvin J. Newell, J. Paul Nyquist

A Martyr's Grace: 21 Moody Bible Institute Alumni Who Gave Their Lives for Christ

by

"Have you grace to be a martyr?" D.L. Moody was once asked.
"No," he replied, "I have not. But if God wanted me to be one, he would give me a martyr's grace."

This book tells of the life and death of 21 Christians who were each a student of Moody Bible Institute. Each account is different but the same faith kept these men and woman strong in Christ through life and death. I was amazed as I read of these soldiers for the Lord. I was touched by their selflessness and love for Christ and others around them. This faith is what should characterize all Christians and I was convicted and longed for such a faith as this. I highly recommend everyone read such accounts because especially in America we tend to forget what it is to suffer for Christianity. We live a life of luxury and we need to be prepared for harder times and meanwhile be praying for and supporting our brothers and sisters in Christ who are persecuted.

In criticism of this paperback book from Moody Press, the descriptions of many of these martyr's salvation experiences were a little confusing. Often, it is mentioned in these biographical sketches that the person strayed from the faith or rejected God for a time before fully surrendering their lives to Christ. It is quite obvious that the real salvation didn't happen before the rejection or wayward years but after, when they fully surrendered their hearts and lives to God!
Also, this book is not the most well-written book I have read. It would be easy for an 8-year old to complete if one doesn't consider the fact that some of the details are a bit gruesome and violent for that age group to read. In conclusion however, this book is definitely worth reading as are all tales of those who lived and died for Christ!!!

They came from around the world. Administrators, teachers, doctors and nurses, church planters and pilots. Regular people in the prime of life.
United by their love for Christ and their studies at the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, these twenty-one men and women set out with the gospel. From the jungles of South America to the parched African plain, and from the dark cloud of communist China to the dangers of the Middle East, they displayed God through service and love.
In A Martyr’s Grace, Marvin Newell tells the individual stories of these faithful men and women who made a difference in the places they served. He also describes—in many cases for the very first time—how Jesus called them home. Their legacies live on in the rainforests, villages, churches, and cities where they died.
What is it that compels ordinary people to sacrifice their lives in this way? Only Christ. They didn’t go expecting to die. But they went—having already given their lives.

book review of He Knows Your Name by Linda Znachko

He Knows Your Name: How One Abandoned Baby Inspired Me to Say Yes to God

This is the story of how Linda Znachko began an unusual and special ministry of providing honorable burials for unloved and abandoned children. It all began one night when the news carried a story of a deceased baby abandoned in a local dumpster. Linda's heart was set on fire and she sought to discover what was to happen to this small person who would not have the burial it deserved as a human being.
I thought the heart and motive behind this ministry worthy of note. Linda is acting completely selflessly in doing such things as she does in this ministry. At the same time, I didn't find the book as necessary as one would expect. It was a little long and repetitive for one not involved with the ministry. It wasn't quite like a book about adopting live children. In fact, not at all. The stories were not life-changing for most of us readers I believe. I found it a little dry and too detailed. However, this is a book with a good purpose.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

When the evening news reported a dead baby abandoned in a local dumpster, Linda Znachko's comfortable life changed. She was suddenly convicted--God was asking her to provide a dignified burial for this tiny lost child. Linda said yes. She had no idea where that first small yes would lead. Linda found herself in places she never dreamed she would be: at the graveside of the child of an abused mother; by the side of a mother fighting for her lost child; and at the funeral of a Texas stripper who died two days before her baptism but left a legacy of love behind. When Linda stepped out of her comfort zone and into these implausible places with people she was unlikely to otherwise encounter, she discovered the life she never knew she wanted--a life of saying yes to God whenever He asks.

Today, Linda has a ministry that gives children a name in life, and dignity and honor in death. When she shares her stories of broken lives redeemed, other broken people respond, and so the ripple effects of that long-ago yes continue to spread, touching lives that yearn for healing, and underscoring the fact that every life matters to God.

review of the new Ben-Hur by Carol Wallace

Ben-Hur: A Tale of the ChristAs one of the bestselling stories of all time, Lew Wallace's Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ has captivated and enthralled millions around the world--both in print and on the big screen. Now Lew's great-great-granddaughter has taken the old-fashioned prose of this classic novel and breathed new life into it for today's audience.

Coming to theaters in August 2016 as Ben-Hur, a major motion picture from MGM and Paramount studios, the story follows Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish nobleman whose childhood friend Messala betrays him. Accused of trying to murder the new Roman governor in Jerusalem, Judah is sentenced to the galley ships and vows to seek revenge against the Romans and Messala. But a chance encounter with a carpenter from Nazareth sets Judah on a different path.

Rediscover the intrigue, romance, and tragedy in this thrilling adventure.

Also included: the inspiring story-behind-the-story of Lew Wallace--Indiana lawyer, author, and Civil War general.

You may have heard of or seen the new version of the famous Ben-Hur movie. Well, to go along with the film is a new version of the classic book itself! This is the classic story which inspired and made the Charlton Heston film we all love. Now, years later, the original author's granddaughter Carol Wallace presents an updated version for today's readers.
I have not seen the film- I am sure it is interesting to watch although I see no need for a remake of one of the best films of all time. Also, I think it sad that Carol Wallace said she was never able to get into her grandfather's literary masterpiece. I am disappointed- greatly disappointed- with the dumbing-down of that original Ben Hur into this far TOO easy-to-read version. This edition is like the typical Christian romances written recently. The reader's brain does no work as he reads the tale; the focus of the book is on emotions and thoughts and romance with no literary value. There are no thought-provoking aspects this book. I am sorry to be so critical but I don't understand the literary weakness of readers today! We need to expand our minds and read older literature. One thing I found interesting which the author Carol Wallace pointed our about the original book is that Lew Wallace spent much of the book describing the surroundings and settings of the Middle Eastern region in Ben Hur because Lew Wallace's 1900's readers wouldn't have known too much about that remote and mysterious lands. In contrast, today's readers have seen hundreds of pictures/videos of those lands and perhaps even visited them! So the majority of the lengthy descriptions would be unwelcome for today's readers.

NKJV WORD STUDY BIBLE

NKJV WORD STUDY BIBLE

This new edition of the New Kings James version Bible is aesthetically pleasing, true to the original NKJV text and full of additional truths and learning. What a marvelous idea this Bible presents as it focuses on different important words from the original Greek and Hebrew text.
Personally, I expected there to be about twice as many interesting words focused on. However, this Bible is still quite helpful especially for new believers and/or new Bible readers.

Book review of Lord, Change My Attitude: Before It's Too Late by James MacDonald

Lord, Change My Attitude: Before It's Too LateLord, Change My Attitude: Before It's Too Late
by

Change your attitude, change your life.

I am excited about this book! I hope many people will read it and really take the time to examine their hearts and attitudes about life! I know my life has been getting better since I really deeply examined my attitudes about everything and repented of my bad and selfish outlook on life! This book is an in-depth examination of the motives of our hearts. Although deep, this book is also easy to read because the author, James MacDonald has such a special and humble way of explaining things to people with clarity and compassion. Because of the author's openness and friendliness, this book has some humorous and very relatable points as well. I do recommend this book for men and women, young and old! The length of the book might intimidate younger readers but I encourage them to take it a chapter at a time and really think on the Biblical wisdom and go through the discussion questions.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

We're very good at explaining why we're unhappy: bad job, bad relationships, bad luck. But there's probably a better reason: bad attitudes.
In Lord, Change My Attitude, James MacDonald shows us just how much our attitudes affect our lives. One of his bestsellers, this book is classic James: It's clear, it's inspiring, and it packs a punch.
Drawing from the experience of the Israelites who grumbled through the wilderness, MacDonald shows how bad attitudes rob us of joy. Coveting, complaining, and being critical are not what our hearts were made for. They were made for thankfulness, contentment, and love. Is your heart straining under the weight of a bad attitude?
Don't read this book if you're looking for a quick fix. Don't read this book if you're unwilling to change. Read it if you're ready for a serious, inside-out attitude adjustment.

Return to Joy: Finding Healing in the Arms of Your Savior by Bev DeSalvo, Linda Dillow

Return to Joy: Finding Healing in the Arms of Your Savior

Return to Joy: Finding Healing in the Arms of Your Savior

Bev DeSalvo draws from her personal experience with abuse and difficult relationships during childhood to bring hope to those who are hurting. She clearly defines the freedom and hopeful future which can be found in the love of Jesus. I loved the optimism and ,well...joy! which radiated throughout this book. It was easy to read; I began and finished it one Sunday afternoon. However, I recommend reading this book more slowly with time to ponder the stories and truths within. Also, I think it would be good to give some thought towards the discussion questions.
Although my review is positive, I can't give this book 5 stars because it wasn't as life-changing as other similar books I have read within the past few years. It was good though and I have no negative comments.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my review.

In Return to Joy, Bev DeSalvo shares her own story of healing from past pain to draw other women along a journey toward intimacy with their Savior. The road to healing is arduous and long. But when we bow our pain in worship, this broken road leads to the heart of God, where all masks are removed and divine comfort can be experienced.

On this journey, understanding the true nature of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit brings healing and restoration to all father, relational, and mother wounds. Learning to aggressively fight against Satan, who is devious but not creative, replaces his evil lies with the truth of God so that they no longer define the person. Recognizing that God is always “with me” leads to a place of rest where there is no fear of being rejected or abandoned. As a result of these new insights, the reader can finally return to joy and experience emotional and spiritual balance. Out of the overflow of intimate worship, God becomes their refuge, provider, and protector, enabling them to move toward others in forgiveness and true community.

Includes a ten-week Bible study.

Review of the book The Things We Knew by Catherine West

The Things We Knew

The Things We Knew

As for the literary quality of this novel, it is not outstanding. Rather, it falls into the easy-read category of most fiction of our era. Nothing about this book expands the mind or challenges the brain and/or heart.

After her mother's death twelve years ago, Lynette Carlisle watched her close-knit family unravel. One by one, her four older siblings left their Nantucket home and never returned. All seem to harbor animosity toward their father, silently blaming him for their mother's death. Nobody will talk about that dreadful day, and Lynette can't remember a bit of it.

But when next-door neighbor Nicholas Cooper returns to Nantucket, he brings the past with him. Once her brother's best friend and Lynette's first crush, Nick seems to hiding things from her. Lynette wonders what he knows about the day her mother died and hopes he might help her remember the things she can't.

But Nick has no intention of telling Lynette the truth. Besides the damage it might cause his own family, he doesn't want to risk harming the fragile friendship between him and the woman he once thought of as a kid sister.

As their father's failing health and financial concerns bring the Carlisle siblings home, secrets begin to surface—secrets that will either restore their shattered relationships or separate the siblings forever. But pulling up anchor on the past propels them into the perfect storm, powerful enough to make them question all they ever believed in.

Gluten-Free for Good: Simple, Wholesome Recipes Made from Scratch by Samantha Seneviratne

Gluten-Free for Good: Simple, Wholesome Recipes Made from Scratch
Gluten-Free for Good: Simple, Wholesome Recipes Made from Scratch by Samantha Seneviratne

No meal should be defined by what's not there. Gluten-Free for Good has 100 easy, healthful gluten-free recipes that are so delicious you’ll never miss the gluten.

I find this cookbook quite interesting as I must agree that gluten can cause a lot of problems and should be avoided if possible. I enjoy trying to cook desserts which are gluten-free, not to mention a variety of main dishes and sides which are vegetable and meat-based rather than wheat-based. One thing I dislike about this cookbook is that it includes mostly savoury recipes which are obviously gluten-free. I would prefer a gluten-free cookbook devoted to bready and desserty recipes. Also, gluten-free doesn't mean sugar-free; something which many of you know and may not even mind.
The photographs in this new cookbook are beautiful and refreshing. The recipes look delicious. What a healthy addition to your kitchen library!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

Here are dishes you may have thought you'd never enjoy again—not without resorting to expensive packaged gluten-free foods that aren't as delicious or healthful as the real thing. These quick-cooking meals are for any time of day, all made from scratch without hard-to-digest processed additives like xanthan or guar gum. Recipes include:

Miso Shrimp with Snap Peas
Roast Chicken with Whole-Grain Sausage Stuffing
Leek and Carrot Brown Rice Risotto
White Pizza with Blistered Tomatoes
Spanish Tortilla
Parmesan Cheese Crackers
Loaded Oat Bars
Upside-Down Skillet Plum Cake
Carrot Cake with Coconut Cream Cheese Frosting
Blondie Bars

The best way to eat more of what you love is to cook real foods at home. With inspiring photographs and a simple pantry primer, Gluten-Free for Good shows how cooking gluten-free can be seamless, instinctive, and appealing.

The Pediatrician's Guide to Feeding Babies and Toddlers by Anthony Porto, Dina DiMaggio

The Pediatrician's Guide to Feeding Babies and Toddlers: Practical Answers To Your Questions on Nutrition, Starting Solids, Allergies, Picky Eating, and More (For Parents, By Parents)
by
I was excited to read this book because for one thing, I grew up helping take care of my 6 younger siblings. Secondly, I love cooking from scratch; thirdly I am interested in health and nutrition. Lastly, I recently began working full time with infants and toddlers at a day care and naturally my interest in babies and their health has increased! I personally don't have any children of my own, but as just explained, I know quite a bit about them! I hope to someday feed my future children very healthily, with homemade foods containing the highest nutrition possible. This paperback guide/cookbook is wonderful. Although the recipes are not all exactly what I would feed my child (many recipes include grains while I would hope to figure a better substitute out for my toddler), I am delighted by the healthy approach this book has. The recipes are full of vegetables and whole grains as well as healthy fats. The book is also full of advice and information concerning your child. This is a fundamental book for any mother, especially new moms! Do get a copy for yourself or buy one for a friend. This would make a perfect baby shower gift.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

Review of the devotional journal How Do I Love Thee? by Jennifer Flanders

How Do I Love Thee?: A Devotional Journal for Wives

How Do I Love Thee?: A Devotional Journal for Wives

I always enjoy reading and reviewing Jennifer Flander's books. I am delighted by her newest line of devotional journals which are always beautiful and geared towards a specific audience. This one is for wives and I can promise you that all wives who are interested in devotions and/or journals will love it. Each page features a lovely illustration- highlighting especially the Victorian era and the 1940's/1950's. I loved looking through the pages of this journal and enjoying every vignette and every saying. There are many quotes, sayings as well as well-chosen Bible verses. There are a variety of topics to fill in, making this book a wonderful keepsake for couples to read years later.
This journal is paperback with a matte finish binding and has 218 pages.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.
Happiness in marriage is not so much a matter of chance as it is a matter of choice. Choosing to be happy means choosing to think on things that are good and noble and right and lovely and pure-including your spouse's most positive, admirable, and endearing qualities. Our marriages can't help but benefit when we discipline ourselves to do this. That's the purpose of this journal in a nutshell. Whether you're writing, drawing, pasting, or coloring in it, each page, prompt, and verse is designed to help you recall and record the things you love most about your husband, to reflect on your most cherished memories, and to recognize God's hand at work in your relationship. I pray you will be richly blessed as you meditate on God's Word and allow it to shape your life and marriage.

When there are no easy answers by John S Feinberg

When There Are No Easy Answers: Thinking Differently about God, Suffering, and Evil
Yet again, I am blessed to read and review a wonderful book on suffering and triumph through faith in Jesus! When There Are No Easy Answers is a book by a man who had to learn to see God's love and mercy through trial and suffering. In 1987 his beloved wife was diagnosed with an incurable, genetically transmitted disease. They were immediately challenged in their faith and their approach to God's goodness in the face of the evil of suffering.
In the months and years following the initial discovery of Mrs. Feignberg's chronic illness, the couple  discovered just how little their Christian community understood about how to support people in crisis. One of the goals in this paperback is to open the eyes of Christians as to the importance of having the right perspective on suffering and the heart to help others through their times of trial.
I recommend this book for those who are going through suffering, have experienced it in the past and perhaps especially for those who, like me have never gone through anything major.
I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

How can a God of love allow terrible things to happen in our lives?Christians often assume they're equipped to deal with tragedy if it enters their lives, but like most people, think it never really will. What happens, then, when we follow God's will to the best of our abilities and heartbreak strikes? Do we mean it when we implore "Have Thine own way, Lord" or does that only apply in times of blessings or small, manageable hurts?

When There Are No Easy Answers considers the problem of grief from every angle, just as the Feinbergs walked through it in their journey. It confronts the question of justice, examines the nature of God, and argues for the reality of grace. Feinberg explores the biblical reasons against the use of traditional cliches and platitudes, especially by those in ministry, and lays out alternatives that can actually comfort and encourage the person who is struggling or grieving.

My review of the book If My Husband Would Change, I'd Be Happy: And Other Myths Wives Believe by Rhonda Stoppe

If My Husband Would Change, I'd Be Happy: And Other Myths Wives Believe

If My Husband Would Change, I'd Be Happy: And Other Myths Wives Believe

Again, I must begin my review with humbly confessing that I cannot be the best judge of this book since I am single. However, I am 25 and have observed marriages all around me for several years. I also happen to be a woman and can (sort of) imagine what it would be like to have a husband. Lastly, I have brothers and can see the way I fail to respect them as foreshadows of how I would probably fail to respect my husband someday. Thus, in short, I was able to understand and glean from this book. In fact I found it immensely helpful. If I should someday marry, this book will be a repeated read for me! I have ready a few books directed to wives and this ones ranks high amidst my couple favourites in that category. I highly, highly recommend this new book!
I love how the author, Rhonda Stoppe is a woman who obviously has character but has learned how to respect and serve and love her husband. This makes this book all the more applicable and relateable to a variety of personalities.
Also,I think it's very important for women to realize why we think and grab ahold of certain myths which are potential marriage-breakers. We need to see these weaknesses/problems/sins and remedy them. This book will help because it is incredibly practical and convicting. It makes a major point of the need for salvation and a trust in Jesus. It explains idolatry and the results really well, which is also a necessary point in a book on marriage!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion. Thank you!

Like most brides on their wedding day, you no doubt were filled with love for your husband and the hope of a happy life together. But perhaps today, as the realities of life together have settled in, those happy expectations are going unfulfilled. And it's tempting to think, "If only my husband would change, I'd be happy."

That myth is but one of many that Rhonda Stoppe dispels in her easy-to-read exploration of what it takes to experience a truly happy marriage. In the process, she addresses such important topics asunderstanding your husband's need for your unconditional respectrekindling the love that drew you to your husband in the first placerefusing to believe the lie that you'd be happier married to someone elselearning to be content in the midst of financial strugglesthinking about sex from a biblical worldview

If you desire to rekindle the love and hope you felt on your wedding day, this book will go a long way toward making that dream come true.

Contains discussion questions and personal reflections at the end of each chapter.
